Barcelona presidential hopeful Victor Font in talks for future Haaland deal
Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has intensified his election campaign by opening negotiations aimed at securing a preferential purchase option for Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. According to a report in Diario Sport, two of Font’s closest advisers, Carles Planchart and Xavier Aguilar, met City CEO Ferran Soriano and sporting director Hugo Viana in Madrid while the English champions were in town for their Champions League encounter with Real Madrid.
The meeting, described by Sport as focused on future transfer possibilities, sought to establish a first-refusal agreement should the Norwegian forward ever decide to leave the Etihad. Although Haaland’s current contract runs until 2023, speculation linking him with a switch to Camp Nou refuses to dissipate.
Font has already gone on record saying that a top-class No. 9 is attainable for Barcelona this summer, telling Mundo Deportivo last month: “If things are done right, Haaland or Julián Álvarez are possible.” He has also promised that coach Hansi Flick will be “blown away” by the sporting project he intends to unveil if he unseats incumbent Joan Laporta in the upcoming elections.
Speaking to reporters this week, Font hinted that work behind the scenes is accelerating: “The sporting directorate is extremely active these days, working in the transfer market, traveling, and meeting with clubs. We are very close to having things we can offer Hansi Flick.”
